American Impressionist Painter, 1858-1925 American painter and illustrator. His formal education was limited, and at 17 he was apprenticed to the painter George Loring Brown of Boston. He was one of the first scholarship students admitted to the school of art sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and took classes there in 1877 and 1878. After spending several years illustrating magazine articles on the Zuni Indians of New Mexico, he decided to study abroad and in 1883 left for Paris. There he studied at the Acad?mie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. During the five years he spent in France he became intimately acquainted with the countryside around the villages of Grez-sur-Loing and Giverny. Luis Melendez
1716-80 He assisted his father, artist Francisco Melendez, until 1737, when he began studying with Lewis-Michel Vanloo, the court painter to Philip V of France. Although accepted (1745) into the Spanish Royal Academy of Fine Arts, he was expelled after his father denounced the academy in a dispute over a royal competition. After traveling throughout Italy, he returned to work for his father as an illustrator of choirbooks.
Johann Wilhelm Schirmer
Julich 1807-1863 Karlsruhe,was a German landscape artist from Julich, within the Prussian Duchy of Julich. The artist, a namesake of Friedrich Wilhelm Schirmer, had a similar aim and career. He first was a student, and subsequently became a professor in the academy of Dusseldorf. He became known as one of the first of the so-called Dusseldorf landscape school. In 1854 he was made director of the art school at Karlsruhe, where he died.
